Галерия Синтезис представя изложбата „Panigiria“ на един от най-значимите гръцки фотографи – Джон Демос. Реализирана между средата на 70-те и началото на 90-те години, серията е представяна в музеи и на фестивали, като Rencontres d’Arles във Франция и The Photographer’s Gallery в Лондон. Тази изложба, създадена специално за галерия Синтезис, включва над 50 фотографии, отпечатани в Принт център ФотоСинтезис под контрола на автора.
„От зората на човечеството идентичността на една общност и мястото, на което тя принадлежи, са неразривно свързани с ритуални действия. Гръцката „панигирия“ – празненство с пируване и танци в чест на светец – е пряк наследник на тези древни ритуали. Обект на фотографиите на Демос в тази серия е по-специално панигирията в Загори – група малки планински села в Епир, Северозападна Гърция.
Понякога дългите експонации на Демос превръщат танците в абстрактна мъгла, обединявайки бавно движещата се група в ярък ореол, обгръщащ музикантите под дървото в църковния двор – обстановка, резонираща с онези най-ранни времена преди появата на архитектурата, когато дърветата са маркирали свещеното място за ритуалите на човечеството. Джон Демос е роден в Солун, Гърция през 1944 г. Завършва история на изкуството и получава магистърска степен по изящни изкуства от University of Chicago през 1969 г. След като се завръща в Гърция, преподава фотография в Doxiades Institute и история на изкуството в American Academy в Атина.
През 1976 г. публикува първия си фотографски проект със заглавието „The Greece That is Passing.” Заедно с четирима други фотографи основава и ръководи Атинския център за фотография. През 1986 г. със съпругата си Бернардин основава агенция „Apeiron Photos”, която представлява „Magnum“ и други значими фотографски агенции в Гърция.
Между 1996 и 1999 г. Джон Демос е назначен от Министерството на културата за директор на „Photographic Center of Skopelos” – докато е на тази позиция той организира изложби и създава Международен фотографски фестивал. Последният му 20-годишен проект, посветен на дърветата, озаглавен „Pnoe Dendron“, получава най-високото отличие през 2022 г. от Международния фотофестивал в Ping Yao, Китай, и от града Ping Yao.

Synthesis Gallery is proud to present the exhibition “Panigiria“ by one of the most important Greek photographers John Demos. Realized between the mid-70s and the early 90s the series was extensively exhibited in venues and festivals such as the Rencontres d’Arles in France and The Photographer’s Gallery in London. This exhibition especially conceived for Synthesis Gallery consists of more than 50 photographs printed at Photosynthesis under the control of the artist.
“Since the dawn of humanity, a community’s identity and the place to which it belongs have been intrinsically linked with ritual acts. The Greek panigiri, feasting and dancing in honour of a holy figure, usually taking place on various saints’ days of the Orthodox church, is the direct descendant of such rituals. The subject of Demos’ photographs in this series is specifically the panigiria of Zagori, a cluster of small mountain villages in Epirus, north-west Greece.
Sometimes, Demos’ long exposures make the dances disappear in a haze of abstraction, sublimating the slow-moving group into a bright halo encircling the musicians beneath the churchyard tree – a setting resonant of those earliest of times before architecture, when trees marked the sacred place for humanity’s rituals. Other times, Demos’ fast-shutter shots focus on individual dancers and musicians, whose moments of festive rapture are translated into compositions of such intensity, they become Mannerist paintings of agony and ecstasy”, writes Alexandra Stara in the afterword of John Demos’ upcoming photobook “Panigiria”.
📎 About the artist:
John Demos was born in Thessaloniki, Greece in 1944. He studied Art History at the University of Chicago and received a Master of Fine Arts in 1969. Upon returning to Greece, he taught photography at the Doxiades Institute and Art History and Humanities at the American Academy of Athens.
In 1976 he published his first body of photographic work under the title “The Greece that is Passing”. Along with four other photographers he then forms and runs the Athens Centre of Photography. In 1986, together with his wife Bernardine he creates the agency “Apeiron Photos” to represent Magnum, and other major photo agencies in Greece.
He was appointed Artistic Director of the “Photographic Centre of Skopelos” by the Greek Ministry of Culture from 1996 to 1999, in which position he organised exhibitions and created an International Photography Festival. Apeiron, as a Greek publisher, becomes a member of the European Publishers Award in Photography. At the same time, he devotes himself to his next photographic project on faith, which culminates in the book “Shadows of Silence”, published in 2002. This work is later exhibited extensively in Europe, Argentina and China, as well as in Houston and Moscow.
In 2000 he creates and sets up the new Rizarios Exhibition Center in Monodendri, Epirus. In 2008 he curates the large retrospective of Josef Koudelka at Benaki Museum. At the same time, Actes Sud publishes his work from 1990-1991 in “Albania… On the Cusp of Change”. Both the Albania colour work and his black & white work from “Shadows of Silence” are exhibited at the International Festival of Photography in Arles, France in 2008. Finally, his latest work of 20 years on trees, titled “Pnoe Dendron” receives the highest honour in 2022 by the Chinese International Ping Yao Photo Festival and the city of Ping Yao.
John Demos’ work has been exhibited worldwide in festivals, museums and galleries. His work is represented in major collections, including the National Library of France, the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, Gulbenkian Modern Art Centre in Portugal, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, as well as in private collections.
